YOLO - THE ONLY GAY CLUB IN AMSTERDAM

Finally - Amsterdam has a gay night club - YOLO! I know it sounds weird - such a gay friendly city and one club only. That is a really sad part of this city’s night life. Every tourist here expect to do some club hopping - sadly - not gonna happen. There are amazing parties happening on certain weekends, but other weekend are absolutely dead. Or they used to be…

Just before the New Years Eve YOLO opened its doors. I’ll try to be a nice person and not criticize the name of the club or the names of the parties… I just really wish the owners were more creative and more up to date with the current slang.

For some reason YOLO does not have any sign/logo on the outside - just a dark door, security guy and a velvet rope. (Are they thinking about changing the name and making the sign later??). We arrived after 1 am, no line, according to security there are 130 people inside. I was about to say 'it’s deserted', when he explained to me that the capacity is 180. Probably the tiniest dancing club I’ve ever been to.

The cover on Saturday is pretty low - 10 Euros (free before midnight). You get a festival style wristband, the cloakroom is included (which is great!) and the bathrooms are free (which is amazing for this city!).

This place is super tiny, but can be fun if you’re there with your friends. Drinks are the same price as in the other gay bars, and I was surprised to get upper shelf Gin for my Gin&Tonic without extra surcharge.

Music was great - DJ and singer duo performed songs from the 90s to this day in house remixes. Nice vibe for a small venue and easily gets everyone into the grove. You can’t miss with that selection!

That night they had a couple go go dancers cramped in that room. That’s where they went really wrong. Firstly for the gay club you need really hot hot hot go go dancers, where as these two looked like every second guy at a circuit party - far away from what we would expect! It got even worse when one of them came dressed as some kind of captain, brought a chair, asked one of the party goers to sit down… and yes - you got it right - it was a striptease time!

To leave the club took forever (even for that small amount of people). Go go dancers were putting their pants on in the same space blocking the partygoers from getting their jackets. Later on some people (pretending or being VIPs) started skipping the line. Basically a small nightmare.

Generally, I had a fun night with my friends there, but I still do not understand the club’s concept and the target audience. I am not the biggest fan of what I’ve seen so far, but I truly hope this venue will find the ways to polish the concept and stay afloat - Amsterdam must have at least one gay club!

Just to be clear there are two other spots calling themselves gay night clubs: - CHURCH - only Thursday is the day when people are fully dressed there, other nights is all about cruising, dark rooms and slings - it’s definitely more sex club than dancing spot. - NYX - women took over this venue - only Saturday is supposed to be gay, but my recent experience was not very gay… and I used to love going there.

Currently, there are just two venues in Amsterdam where you can go and dance every weekend - a bar SOHO and a club YOLO.
