You can only love it or hate it - nothing in between (although sometimes I have mixed feelings too). Japanese still think gay is just a phase, some of them are scared of drag queens, some do not use condoms as STDs is a gaijin (foreigner) thing. They say the gay neigborhood SHINJUKU NICHOME the largest number of homovenues in Asia, but only 4 of them are gaijin friendly, and they are as tiny as everything else here…

 

It's a small chance that you will make local friends with them being so racist and/or shy and/or speaking Jenglish; however, it's one of the best place in the world to meet smart handsome classy guys from around the globe as it takes some guts to travel / live in this far away country. I made a few really good friends in these lower class venues (that's what true tokyote would call them).

 

Go there, get a drink (or better a few!), talk to the classy shit-faced people to make it the best night (or weekend) of your life! … and make sure you come back with the first train, as that's an experience on it's own.
